Aug 9th meeting minutes:
The meeting was called to order by President Tony Hill. Tony said a prayer and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.
Tony asked for a moment of silence for CWA Members who passed away since the previous meeting. He then read the names of new Chapter Members: Linda Slade, Patricia Newman, Susan Newman, Carol Gunn, Judith Foster, Terry White, Gregory Rupert and Gary Depriest. None were present.
Nancy Jinkerson read the minutes of the previous meeting and announced the luncheon menu for the day. No corrections were offered. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the minutes as read.
Nellie Girouard read the finance report. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the report.
Tony asked everyone to try to recruit new Members to the Chapter.
Vice President Bob Huss spoke. He talked about the CWA picnic and said it was the best attended one yet. He urged everyone to attend the Labor Day parade which begins at 9:00 am on Labor Day. The CWA is farther back this year near Olive and Jefferson. The theme will be “Five for the Fight”. They are requesting that people to contribute $5 each for a fund to help out of work Union Members.
He urged the Members to vote for Robin Carnahan for the US Senate. If Roy Blunt, her Republican opponent, is elected he will attempt to change the current laws regarding health care in a way that will hurt our children and grandchildren.
He shared some items of interest from labor history showing how far workers have come in the past hundred years.
On October 16th they are trying to organize a labor walk in conjunction with the Women’s and COE Conference (Committee on Equity). He asked for volunteers to drive walkers to various locations.
Tony introduced Bill Otto who showed a film about the plight of workers who have lost their jobs for various reasons and how the labor movement can contribute to the country’s economic recovery. After the film, Bill shared some examples of how workers are getting locked out, losing their jobs or having their wages cut while CEOs are getting huge bonuses and severance packages. He also summarized the recent election results and how they affected workers.
Tony discussed the raffle and urged the Members to buy tickets and help sell them as well.
Drawings were held and monies were given out as prizes.
With no further business, Tony shared a funny story. A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn.
The next meeting will be on Monday September 13th. The October meeting will be on Monday October 11th.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Jinkerson, Secretary
